The first of our rhubarb roots has started to show signs of shooting. We’re not going to force it this year, but instead let it get itself established so that by next year we should be harvesting enough fruit for a few summer crumbles.

We have been out in the plot planting rhubarb crowns. These are fairly inexpensive, and although we’ll have to wait until next year before we can take our first harvest it will be much cheaper than buying cut rhubarb in the shops.

A late potato harvest

A big surprise on Saturday: 2007′s efforts are still bearing fruit. Well, vegetables, to be more precise. Turning out a bag of last year’s potato sowings proves that the crop is hardy enough to flourish right through the winter.
