Autumn is certainly here, going on the colour of the trees, so it’s time to start picking the last of our crops before it gets properly cold. Not that there’s an awful lot left.

It’s late in the season, but we still have plenty of green tomatoes. In an effort to get them to ripen, we have trimmed back the foliage on our vines.
Caring for tomato plants is simple, but if you want to maximise your crop some careful, regular pruning is essential. It’ll keep your plants’ minds on the job in hand.
Well, we’ve had our first tomato of the year, but it isn’t great news. It was green for starters, as you’d expect right now, but more importantly it had also been nobbled by thing or things unknown.
Now that they’re starting to get a bit bigger and stronger we’ve transplanted our healthiest tomato seedlings into bigger pots, giving them room to start stretching their roots.
I’m very impressed by the Black Russian tomatoes. It’s only taken them a week to start shooting in their little paper pots. At the moment they’re sat by the patio doors in the dining room and the enjoying the sun, sheltered from the worst of the weather.
The growing season has officially begun on the plot as we have planted 2009’s first seeds: a dozen Black Russian tomatoes that should stand out from our regular crops.
Chutneys, as we’ve said before, are easy. So long as you keep an eye on them and don’t let them stick to the bottom of the pan they’re a good first step on the road to preserving.
With the family coming around for the weekend, we wanted to feed them as much as possible using produce from the garden. Clearly a big salad was called for.
