Chef Nigel Slater has a new book coming out, which focuses primarily on vegetables, and particularly on growing your own. He got so frustrated about not being able to bag himself an allotment when he was writing it that he dug up his lawn to establish his plot.

Who says the scraps you feed your chickens need to come from the kitchen? Now that our potted crops are coming to the end of their run, we’re getting them to help out in the garden.
After months of very slow progress on the plot we managed to bring in a bumper harvest with just an hour of picking, giving us plenty of beans and potatoes to share with friends.
Blanching broad beans lets you preserve your crop so that you can continue feeding yourself from the produce of your garden right through the winter.
Tonight we harvested the first of our broad beans. Ten pods in total, with three or four little beanlets inside each one. We cooked them up into a risotto with some peas and broccoli. Delicious.
A few days was all it took for our bean saplings to lose all their leaves. We haven’t yet worked out whether the wind or the birds are to blame.
Even the frosts don’t seem as harsh as they were, and as we move into spring the plants – both in the greenhouse and out – are enjoying the warmer weather.
Could beans be the happiest and most cheerful plants in the plot? Even before they blossom they have a happy demeanour and beg for your attention.
With the greenhouse heater in place, we’ve started to pot up more of our seeds, putting in some safety-net duplicates in case the ones in the plot don’t come up.
Cloches are expensive, so we looked for something cheaper but just as effective. A quick root through the recycling bag cane up with the answer: old bottles.
