Last weekend we made this year’s batch of crab apple jelly, and this weekend we tried the first of it on some slices of toast. The results were very tasty.

We decided this weekend that after two weeks in the demijohn it was time to bottle the cider. Despite all the effort, it only stretched to six and a half pints.
There is so much free fruit to pick right now that it’s the perfect time to make one of the most tasty pies going: blackberry and apple.
With so many apples starting to ripen we thought we’d try our hands at making cider. Unfortunately the wait between brewing and drinking is a fairly long one…
We’ve opened the apple schnapps. Well, one of them. I’m not sure whether it’s the one we made from the tree next door or the apples down by the river, but it’s been sitting in the outhouse since September, slowly ageing.
We’re still using up our bumper crop of apples, today combining them with another great hedgerow scavenger fruit, blackberries, to make a delicious breakfast jelly.
Our first home-grown apple is a whopper, and both juicy and sweet. What a shame it was the only fruit on our decidedly underwhelming tree.
Apples are ripe for picking right now, and with the hedgerows being so heavy with this free crop it’s the ideal time to make apple chutneys to see us through the winter.
Now is the time to be making schnapps, ready for drinking at Christmas. We’re making ours with apples for a seasonally-appropriate treat.
The neighbours are on holiday and have given us free access to their abundant apple tree. But what should we do with all that fruit?
