As the days turn colder (and they really are turning colder) the chickens are starting to lay less. We used to get two eggs every morning, but now it’s down to one in the morning and one in the afternoon if we’re lucky. The spacing between those two layings is getting wider all the time, too, which inevitably means we’re heading for a one-egg day before long.
So we’ve been trying to perk them up. They’ve been getting plenty of off-cuts from the kitchen, and yesterday when I was out tidying up the garden, I put one of the spent tomato pots in the run with them which they’ve delighted in picking to bits ever since. Barbara got so excited she jumped on the edge of it and tipped the whole thing over, spilling out the soil. That gave them something to scratch around in, searching for grubs to peck out.
They’re easily entertained. Even now as I look out the window, a day after it was put in there, they’re clustered around it and Margot is picking at the spilled compost. And the best thing is, as we grew 14 tomato vines this year, they have plenty more entertainment to come.
