A big surprise in the coop this morning – in every sense of the word. As I’ve written before, our eggs were averaging 49 grams each. They’ve got a little heavier since then, pushing them into ‘medium’ egg territory, which runs from 53g – 63g and is perfectly acceptable for eating with soldiers, and for a lot of baking tasks.
So imagine our surprise this morning when Rich went to let the chickens into the run and found a 77g monster sitting on the straw in the nesting box. It positively dwarfed the regular brown egg sitting beside it, which tips the scales at 55g. 77g is officially classed as ‘extra large’.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the big egg, which is 40% heavier than the regular one (you can see the comparison in the picture above), was a double-yoker and will make for a great sandwich. Squeezing it out must have been eye-watering.

Keep an eye on your chickens then. We lost one of ours last week – she became egg bound trying to lay an enormous egg when we were out at work, and by the time we found her it was too late for her.
What makes it even worse is that if we had managed to get her to the vet in time they would probably have been able to save her.
If it is not a silly question, what determines the size of the egg laid? Is it the feed, breed, age of the chicken?
Cheers, Nigel
just checking to see if our nely laying hen (2 weeks or so) is normal…she laid a monster 87g one 2 days ago, should we be alarmed? Is this soom kind of record?
