It was only when they realised they could eat it that they trusted it.

We woke up to find deep snow on the plot this morning. It’s a good job we weren’t planning on digging any carrots as we wouldn’t be able to find them.

It’s totally spooked the chickens. It’s so bright out there with all the reflected light that they were clucking to be let out long before we got out there ourselves this morning. When I slid back the door, though, Gerry actually hopped back in fright as the expanse of meringue-white garden stretched out before her. The other two clustered at the pop hole, wondering what was holding her up.

Eventually she chickened out (appropriate for the species, I suppose), and shuffled back between their wings, and it was Margot who ventured out first, pecking at the white flakes on the steps and finding them edible.

Ironically that’s what brought out the other two. As soon as they saw you could eat it they pecked their way all the way down the ladder and on into the run.
