Barbara's undercarriage

Poor Barbara. She’s been moulting for a while now but it’s really accelerated over the last few days. It’s an age thing. All chickens do it every so often so they can re-grow themselves a whole new coat of feathers.

Every time she shakes herself she dislodges another cloud of them, and now her whole undercarriage is a forest of little spikes, as you can see from the picture. She looks so skinny compared to the plump hen we’re used to.

It’ll pass with time, and in a couple of months she should have a lovely new plumage, but I hope it doesn’t get too cold between now and then.
