August was a great month for the chickens. They seemed to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine, and responded to the extra light with 91 eggs. That’s the most we’ve had in one month since the start of spring, when they celebrated the end of winter by laying almost 20 more eggs than they had in January and February.

It was also one egg up on July, when they laid 90. That is a real-world increase, too, as July and August have the same number of days, so the additional egg isn’t because they had an extra day of laying time.

That brings our count for the year to 677, and an average of 2.8 per day, so clearly our three hens are still in peak laying condition. This many eggs would have cost us £191.82 if we’d bought them in the shops at a cost of £1.70 per half dozen.
