A rude awakening for one of our chickens

An unexpectedly small egg

Our new chickens shouldn’t be laying eggs yet. In fact, they shouldn’t be laying for a good five or six weeks. Nevertheless we found a suspiciously small egg in the nest yesterday, which has set us wondering.

Look at how much smaller it is than our regular eggs. That’s the mystery egg on the right in the picture above. The one on the left is a regular egg. It’s almost half the size. It’s also a lovely creamy colour that could be Barbara. It’s certainly not Gerry or Margo.

But then again a Rhode Ranger should be popping out brown eggs, not cream.

So what are the chances? Well, biologically I’d say they were slim. Colour-wise it’s a bit off. But could Barbara, our champion egg layer, really be putting out something that’s barely any larger than a generous grape?

You have to wonder.
