Why should you grow your own?

We had a very good demonstration of why it’s worth growing your own this week, even when vegetables are so cheap in the shops at the moment. Here it is.

Want to see it from a different angle to put it into context? Here you go:

Very small cauliflower

That cauliflower was delivered with the week’s shopping and cost £1.09. It wouldn’t even have served two for a meal, and in fairness the person who bought it did get a refund when they complained, but it’s clear that the cauliflower wasn’t ready for picking, and it should have been left in the ground much longer.

If it was home-grown, it would have been. Growing your own lets you pick your produce when it’s ready, not when the supermarket tells the farmer it needs a delivery. It means you get just the crops you want, and as you have the choice of picking them later, you often get larger, healthier, less wasteful examples.

Remember that the next time friends ask you why you bother growing your own, when fruit and veg is so cheap in the supermarket.
