The garden is full of buds and shoots, the daffodils are out in bloom and the crab apple, apricot and cherry trees have little leaves coming out on their branches. That can only mean one thing: planting time has arrived.
Not mass-market planting time yet, unfortunately. Our potatoes still haven’t finished chitting, and it’s not time for us to start on the beans yet, but the first of our tomato varieties – Ildi – need planting outdoors earlier than most.
So, we made up 10 wraps using our paper potter, which is just the best garden gadget ever. It’s so low tech, carved from lovely wood, and a great way of recycling newspapers. Better still, when your seedlings are large enough you can then transplant them directly to their final growing position without removing them from the pot as it simply biodegrades in the ground.
It feels good to know that the growing season has started and that as I sit here typing this, Alan Carr on the radio, gin in hand, olives on the desk, the first of this year’s crops is starting to germinate in the greenhouse.
With the clocks going forward tonight, it feels like spring is finally here.
