It feels good to have the canes back up in the garden. I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that the last of the frost has passed, and the beans are now getting quite large, so I’ve taken an executive decision and planted them out in the plot.

The cat loved it. He was jumping around in the soil as I was trying to rake it to a fine tilth, picking up the stones between his paws and throwing them around like they were little mice. I hope that’s the end of his playing in the plot, though – I would really rather that he didn’t go digging up the plants.

Anyway, I’ve planted out ten – five each of runner beans and climbing beans. That leaves us with an emergency store of about four runners and two climbing bean plants in the greenhouse to replace any that get snapped by the wind, snared by the frost or soaked to the point of rotting by an unexpected storm.

Looking out of the window now at the tall bamboo wigwams it feels like summer is finally upon us. A couple of months from now we could be eating the first of this year’s home-grown beans.
