The potatoes have started

Potato shoots

Rather excitingly, the potatoes have started shooting. I really enjoy growing potatoes in bags behind the greenhouse, as they don’t take up any space in the plot, are easy to care for, and produce the most delicious crop.

At the moment it’s only the Rooster variety that is showing any growth, but considering they’ve only been in a couple of weeks and the weather hasn’t been entirely friendly, the four-inch stalks are pretty impressive.

Sadly, the Charlotte seed potatoes in the outhouse are still not doing much chitting. I took another look at them this morning, and the nobbles on them are so small that if they were regular supermarket potatoes you’d still be prepared to rub them off and eat them.

I’m reluctant to leave them out for too much longer, though, so whatever state they’re in by the weekend, I’ll be planting them up.

aha – we will be planted our potatoes in bags at the weekend. There is sometimes a big divide against those who chit and those who don’t. It it more from disorganisation than anything else that I rarely leave them to chit.
