One of the best things about keeping chickens – apart from the fact they’re quite cute – is that they are walking, clucking dustbins. We don’t need a compost heap; we just feed all of our scraps to the chooks and they greedily gobble them up.
And it’s not just kitchen waste, either. Now that the dwarf French beans are coming to an end, we’re tasking them with tidying up the pots, by putting them into the chicken compound one by one, giving them a day to pick through each one before we swap it for the next.
They love it, and spend almost as much time jumping into and out of the pots as they do pulling at the leaves and stalks.
The result is perfectly pecked clean pots with just the compost left for us to re-use. They’re hard little workers, our gardener hens.
