Potato blight?
I think my potatoes might have blight. The leaves of one crop are starting to turn a bit brown, which I had assumed was down to the hot weather we’ve been having drying them out. A quick hunt around online, and a look through the excellent Grow Your Own Veg, which has become something of a lifesaver for me these last few months, indicates differently.
Some of the leaves on one of the plants are starting to turn brown, which could be down to the fact they’ve been fairly comprehensively nibbled by the snails and slugs. But that could also be wishful thinking. I think I’m going to have to cut off the brown foliage and top up the earth around the stumps ready for some earlier-than-planned harvesting at the weekend.
My lettuces have been depleted in number by one. Last week I had ten. Today, just nine. Hmmm.
Andrew’s tomatoes are going a similar way as they have blossom end rot, where the underside of each fruit turns black. This can be caused by irregular watering, lack of calcium in the soil, or stress, depending on who you believe.
Inside the house, work continues. The bathroom man is still there doing the tiling, and the gas man is fitting the new boiler and removing the hot and cold tanks from the kitchen and loft respectively. The fact they’re both there at the same time is just happy coincidence.
The only bad news, internally, came from the electrician who took one look at the outdated wiring in the consumer unit over the front door today and condemned it. So, that’s another unexpected outlay heading this way.
