Planting this year’s herbs

Transplanted rosemary in a pot

There was talk of frost last night, but I’m not sure whether to believe it. It’s so warm during the day right now. I’m sitting out on the patio, with the cat sniffing around in the borders and the chickens scratching and pecking at the end of the garden, with the church bells ringing in the distance. It’s quite idyllic.

So, I’ve taken a bit of a chance and planted up our mint and rosemary outside the back door. A bit of a risk as April isn’t entirely out of danger (nor May – ‘N’er Cast a Clout Til May is Oot’) so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

My hand was somewhat forced: the mint was in need of transplanting, and the trough I’ve put it in is almost too heavy to lift when it’s empty. When it’s full of compost you’ve got no chance.

So, will we or won’t we have mint this summer? Like so much on the plot that will be down to the weather.

If you have problems with the mint I’d be surprised as it is really hard to kill. The rosemary may well sulk if you don’t take it in at night if things might turn chilly. Rosemary can be touchy. Very touchy. Or else it will thrive for years then suddenly die.

I have rosemary and 2 kinds of mint and they’ve sat outside in pots/planters for about 2 years. Didn’t know they were supposed to be scared of frost, mine seem fine.
