Monster carrots

I don’t want to harp on about the carrots, but as they’re the only crop we’re harvesting at the moment they have become the focus of our vegetable-growing activities.

But just look at the size of this thing. It’s a monster.

Big carrot

It’s way bigger than anything we saw in the shops this morning, and looking at the rest of the tops in the run from which we dug it, it’s not a one-off, either.

We grew two varieties of carrot this year – one early and one late – and this one comes from the late row. Even better than the size, though, is its condition. Not a single nibble from a worm or a slug, and pulled from the ground relatively cleanly, so not much need for a long wash before peeling.

It almost seems a shame to eat it.

Okay, I wasn’t going to say anything, but I’m intrigued – why do you peel your carrots? I’m sure you’re organic (aren’t you?)I find there is no need to peel. Sorry not critizising just curious.

I guess it’s a habit we’ve got into. Having spent many years buying supermarket carrots before switching to growing our own, we became accustomed to peeling before we steamed our veg. Now we tend to peel our home-grown carrots because they are quite mucky when they come out of the plot.
