BBC Dig In

I came home last night to a very exciting envelope: my free seeds from the BBC as part of its Dig In campaign.

I was lucky to get some, as they were quickly over-subscribed, but for anyone who didn’t get their hands on a pack and would still like to grow along with the team on Gardener’s World it’s easy to make up a pack of your own.

The crucial part is the little book that tells you how to plant and nurture your babies, which the BBC has put online to download for free. Click here to get the PDF.

Once you’ve done that, you need to buy your seeds, which you should be able to pick up for about 80p a pack in DIY stores like B&Q. You can see the seeds below, along with the book and a sheet of stickers for any following-along kids.

If you want to get exactly the same seeds as they’ll be growing on TV, then you need Gardener’s Delight tomatoes, Lollo Rossa lettuce, Boltardy beetroot, Early Nantes carrots and Hunter squash.

The one I’m a bit apprehensive about is the squash, as we tried growing squash a couple of summers ago and it was a complete failure, so it will be interesting to grow along with the experts and see where we went wrong.

Most of these crops can be grown in tubs or pots, so even if you don’t have a plot of your own you should be able to follow the series.

Hi Neil, Margaret, Kalpana and all the others who have been asking for free seeds…

As the post says, these are from the BBC, not Blagger. The Dig-In scheme seems to be running every year at the moment, so no doubt they’ll come around again next spring.

Keep an eye open, and good luck with your application…
