Finally getting the planting underway

Pots in the greenhouse

It feels like we’re so far through the year already. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s still only April and we have most of the growing season ahead of us. Even so, those dates on the back of the seed packets seem to have come so late this year.

To that end we’ve only just got the second variety of tomatoes – Gardeners’ Delight – and two varieties of beans potted up. We’re rationalising our beans this year and growing only runners and climbing beans. With three varieties every summer for the last few years we’ve had something of a glut of beans in the high season, which seems a bit of a waste.

So, we may be planting less this year, but it gives us a chance to concentrate on the crops that really matter. And it sure does feel good to have a potting bench full of little red pots again.

We only started planting a few weeks ago ourselves, but we already feel behind schedule.

There is so much to do this time of year!

I know what you mean about having too much of one kind of vegetable – I still have more tomatoes and peppers in the freezer than we can possibly use by August.
