Chitting this year's potatoes

Chitting potatoes

We were both a bit dubious about doing potatoes again this year. They’re so cheap to buy in the shops and it’s a bit of a faff having the growing sacks lined up behind the greenhouse, but having harvested some good late tubers last week, I think our minds were turned.

Then we saw some dirt cheap seed potatoes in town on Saturday – £1 for five, which should do a bag and a bit – and we were decided. We bought three packs for £3 and now have enough for a good five potato sacks.

Now all we have to do is wait for them to get on with chitting. The Rooster and Kestrel varieties are pretty much ready to put in the ground right now, but the Charlotte potatoes have some catching up to do.

Besides, there’s no hurry. We’re still digging up last year’s planting, so keeping them in egg boxes while they mature for another couple of weeks is no hardship.
