Chilli in the greenhouse

I’d more or less given up on the chillis doing anything this year. I planted them up at the same time as the tomatoes and for weeks they’ve been doing nothing.

Now, though, thanks to the magic of the greenhouse heater, they’ve suddenly sprung into life, and almost all of the little cardboard sticks on which the seeds were mounted now sit beside a healthy green shoot.

To be honest, I’m quite surprised that they’re doing anything as the seeds have been sitting on the kitchen windowsill, exposed to the damp of cooking and the heat of the direct sun for almost two years so their chances of producing anything at all were slim at best.

Clearly chillis are as hardy as they are hot.

So I’m not the only one who is waiting patiently for chilli and pepper seeds to get their act together and actually do something – that cheers me up no end. After three weeks of doing everything said on the packet I have one with it’s seedling leaves and two just poking through the soil. Sad returns on a whole packet of seeds – which admittedly came as part of a special offer for just postage and packing!

This is my first year growing chillis, peppers and tomatoes. Luckily I planted mine 3/4 weeks ago and out of about 8 seeds each I have about 5 germinated from each type. I’ve been growing mine in a heated proppogator as I have no greenhouse.
Not sure if they’ll last though, I don’t seem to have the watering right yet and I’ll need to transplant them at some point.
