Bumper beans and potatoes

For weeks, nothing, and the suddenly… bam! A bumper crop. Just look at all the beans and potatoes we harvested in an hour this evening. Fortunately we don’t have to eat it all ourselves or the beans would be well past their best by the time we got to the end. We have plenty of people to share them with.

So, four types of beans: regular runner beans front-right, and behind them red Italian beans; front left are dwarf French beans, and the beans behind them beside the bucket are regular French beans.

It’s the potatoes that I find most satisfying, though. I always enjoy turning them out as there’s something quite magical about seeing one potato buried in compost turn into a whole plate-ful three months later. This year, for the first time, we’ve grown a variety with wonderful red skins called Roosters. Sadly, I think that they’re not going to be red on the inside, but I hope that they at least keep their red skins through the cooking.

I feel a bit better about the crops’ slow progress this year now.

Congratulations! It looks fabulous. I have been following your great blog for a few months now and have loved seeing your produce and what you make with it. This year we are attempting to grow veg for the first time (not hugely successfully as we have a very shady veg patch) but are having great fun trying. I also love cooking – especially baking and preserving, and most especially using foraged food!

We have been freezing beans for the last week as we have had a bumper crop as well. Hopefully there will be enough to see us through until next year. We are still waiting on our potatoes. I want to dig them up now but have been told to leave them a little longer. Oh well, I have the mint standing by

Fantastic harvest! I am looking forward to digging up our potatoes we have had growing in pots, it is like a treasure hunt digging down and finding more and more potatoes.

what vegetables can i feed a chickens

They will eat pretty much any vegetables you want to feed them, but you should not give them raw potato or raw potato skin. Otherwise, they seem happy with pretty much anything you should want to give them – even onions. They have no sense of taste, only smell, so hot foods like that don’t seem to bother them.

This is the earliest we have ever harvested potatoes, and we were impressed by the haul. Very satisfying. If you have several bags of them growing (or a lot of sites in your plot) why not unearth one set and give yourself an early treat.
