Victorian Farm… finale

2009-victorian-farm-dvd.jpgSo this evening I watched the last episode of Victorian Farm on the iPlayer, and immediately ordered the DVD. Amazon is doing a silly price at the moment if you pre-order: £7.48 including free delivery. It should be £19.99.

It’s been one of the best series I’ve watched in ages, and I’ve found it very inspirational. As I’ve written here before, it shows you what true self-sufficiency is, from the point of view of labourers who would have ended up in a grim workhouse if things had gone wrong.

The Victorian farmer and his crops were forever at the mercy of the weather, and with fewer chemicals and machine-made goods at their disposal they made use of everything they could from the land. It’s left me wanting to find out how to weave your own hat, and make beer in a bath tub without the help of a tin of malt like we used. I want pigs and goats and a horse and cart, all of which is totally impractical when you live in a three-bed semi. So I’ll just have to settle with living it second hand through the TV.

Of course that’s not all bad. It means I won’t have to eat the pigs’ eyes that they happily munched on, or the tongue, although I must admit that the Victorian curry looked very tasty.

If you missed out on Victorian Farm’s scheduled broadcasts, I can’t recommend the DVD highly enough, and at Amazon’s current price it’s worth ordering a copy in advance. The discounted copy is available here, and if you order now it’ll be dispatched on 2 March.

If you can’t wait that long, the book that went with the series is available now, also from Amazon, where it’s discounted to £12, rather than the full price of £20.

It was a great series. We watched it via our satellite connection.

That is an amazingly cheap price for the DVD too. I would recommend it to anyone that hasn’t seen it.

The Victorian Farm
The people who did this also did an earlier programme on an Elizabethan Farm, very few people seem to have seen it. It was as good as the Victorian Farm. Unfortunately I was so clever I never bothered to copy the programme and no DVD seems available. The BBC don’t seem to be repeating it.

I think you mean Tales From The Green Valley. This is available from Amazon for £9.58 (a big discount on the recommended price of £24.99). I have bought a copy myself, but not yet watched it; I’ve just finished re-watching Victorian Farm, so Green Valley is next.
