We’ve been planting lavender in a long trough by the patio doors.
I don’t go much for planting flowers. They’re pretty, but I’d rather use our garden for growing things we can eat, or housing the chickens. That’s why we have a gardener for doing the flowers and shrubs, leaving us to concentrate on the veg.
The one exception is lavender. We planted a fair bit last year, which died down over the winter, but it’s recovering well now we’re into spring. It’s good for attracting the bees, which need all the help we can afford to give them right now, and is actually a productive crop, too.
Apart from picking the flowers and using them to scent your home, you can use them to make lavender biscuits or – this year’s intention – use them in home-made soap.
It turns out that soap is actually very easy to make, so it will make for a nice autumn project once we have enjoyed the scent of the flowers throughout the summer.
For now, though, they need to concentrate on growing. As you can see, they’re still very small and look a bit lost in their new home.

Let me know about the soap! I have a front garden entirely full of lavender and was wondering what I could do for Christmas!
I also look forward to your soap making. I recently made a lavender liqueur out of dried petals that is marvelous. I use it medicinally but its tasty on its own even with all the added sugar. Thanks for posting this as I am starting to plan my garden and will add lavender to it.
