Could we kill the chickens?
Posted on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 in Keeping chickens
Could we kill the chickens? It’s a question we’ve been pondering for the last week or so, kicked off in a pub conversation after David Dirty Boots posted an entry on his blog about the eventual and inevitable wearing out of your laying stock:All chickens are born with a preset number of eggs. Once these are laid there won’t be any more.

Planting raspberry canes
Posted on Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 in Growing food
Raspberry canesThe raspberry canes have finally arrived. And not a moment too soon, either. They were scheduled to turn up somewhere in the ludicrously wide window of ‘November to March’, and with March quickly running out I was having doubts that’s ever be delivered. But delivered they were, and this morning I set out to get them planted. There’s something quite invigorating about digging the garden before work.

Racking up the eggs
Posted on Monday, March 2nd, 2009 in Keeping chickens
We keep a tally of the daily egg laying now, on a calendar in the outhouse. It’s a good way to check how the chooks are fairing with the shorter, darker days through winter (fortunately now getting a bit longer and lighter) and how much the eggs are costing us.In January they did 74 in total, which is impressive. It works out at about 25 eggs apiece, or almost one each per day.

The last carrots
Posted on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 in Growing food
We’ve done really well for carrots this year. On Saturday afternoon, determined to get the plot emptied by the end of February, I dug up the last of the crop and separated them into two camps: good for eating, and good for chickens. The results were pretty impressive. The good for eating pile filled a washing up bowl (above), despite the fact that I was being quite picky and only saving the best of the best.

The demise of battery eggs
Posted on Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 in General
Battery eggs are on the way out. Quite literally: they’ve been removed from the theoretical ‘basket’ of goods the government compares year to year to see how prices are going up or down. While I would love to say that this is because more people are keeping their own little flock at home, the truth of the matter is almost as good: battery eggs simply aren’t as representative of peoples’ buying habits as they once were.
