New chicken compound
Posted on Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 in Keeping chickens
We ordered a new compound for the chickens a couple of weeks ago, and on Thursday morning it was delivered. Not a problem, you might expect, except that as I was going to be out I got it delivered to the other side of town, and it is very big.Really big. When built it’ll be 12ft by 8ft and could house a few dozen birds – not that we’re planning on keeping any more than 10 so they have plenty of room to flap and strut.

The last onions
Posted on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Growing food
Digging in the garden is a wonderful way to start the day. It’s so nice to spend an hour before work out in the fresh air, the chickens contentedly clucking to themselves as they peck over last night’s vegetable peelings, listening to the sound of dog walkers passing by in the alley.I want to get the plot ready for planting by the end of the weekend, so started this morning by taking out the last onions of 2008′s sets.

Living off-grid in Spain
Posted on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Profile
David and his partner – collectively Mr and Mrs Boots – left the UK in 2004 to pursue their dream of self-sufficiency. Now living on a farm in northern Spain with their cats, dogs and chickens, they live off the land, harvest all of their water and generate their power from the sun and the wind. It sounds idyllic, but is it really?

Victorian Farm… finale
Posted on Monday, February 16th, 2009 in General
So this evening I watched the last episode of Victorian Farm on the iPlayer, and immediately ordered the DVD. Amazon is doing a silly price at the moment if you pre-order: £7.48 including free delivery. It should be £19.99.It’s been one of the best series I’ve watched in ages, and I’ve found it very inspirational. As I’ve written here before, it shows you what true self-sufficiency is, from the point of view of labourers who would have ended up in a grim workhouse if things had gone wrong.

The chickens get a new home
Posted on Monday, February 23rd, 2009 in Keeping chickens
We started our little home flock with an Omlet Eglu Cube, rated for six birds. That should have been fine as we were only keeping three, but without much opportunity for them to free range around the garden, it quickly felt a bit cramped, even for those of us on the outside. So a couple of weeks back we bought a much bigger compound from Forsham Cottage Arks, had it delivered and, this weekend, set about putting it together.
