Jam making on the up

Quince jelly

Jam making is on the up. So reckons the Telegraph, at least, which quotes posh kitchen gadget shop Lakeland. It lists an electric jam maker as the best-selling product in the whole of its catalogue. Not bad going when supermarket jam is so cheap.

Even John Lewis is reporting a rise of almost a third in sales of jam pot lids. Is it coincidence that both of the stores seeing the biggest rise in jam making kit and a bit… well, ‘posh’? Perhaps that’s because the kind of people who shop there are also the kind of people who are more likely to be buying their jams in more expensive supermarkets. For them it makes sense to make their own as they can make a decent saving without heading to Lidl or Aldi for a 9p pot of raspberry jelly.

But the question is, if everyone is jumping on the jam jamboree, will there be enough supplies for the rest of us? Not of sugar and fruit, but of pots and lids and muslin bags.

Me? I’m not worried: like most jam makers I’ve been carefully washing and keeping every jar I’ve emptied this year, whether it originally held jam, jelly or pickle, so I have plenty waiting to be used at the end of the season when jam making gets started in earnest.

How are you set for supplies?
