Our first successful batch of yoghurt has come to its natural end. After six generations we took our eye off it for a little too long, and it's gone bad. Time to go back to square one and start again.

Spare a thought for the yoghurt. It had been doing so well, but I took my eye off it for a few days, and it all went to pot. Poor thing.

I have been quite devoted in eating some of it most nights, and then making up a fresh batch with the end of the previous week’s jar full for the week ahead at the weekends.

Only the week before last, for some reason, we didn’t eat much, which meant we didn’t need to do a new batch. And then this week it took until Monday night before we flipped the lid.

The contents were rather smelly.

I was tempted to try making a new batch with what we already had – after all, it was sixth generation by then, and I liked the idea of extending the family yet further – but I didn’t really want to risk it. Particularly not as we have friends coming over at the weekend and want to serve it as desert.

So, as one yoghurt culture passes on (by way of the sink) another comes into being. Welcome, Yoghurt 2.0.
