The snow is slowly receding, and with it goes the magic. It was quite wonderful to walk out in on Monday morning, and we both enjoyed working from home later that afternoon and watching it drift down past the window.

Now, though, it’s turned into compressed ice on the pavements, which have only been worsened by a persistent drizzle this morning. Walking to the station is treacherous.

As a measure of how deep it was, though, I’ve downloaded the pictures from my camera, which I took when I went out to sweep off the greenhouse roof. It’s fairly old, our greenhouse, and over the last couple of years we’ve variously nailed slipped panes back in place, or swapped them out altogether with panels of wood as they’ve smashed. We should really buy a new one, but can’t justify it when this one – which is so nice as it’s wood, not metal – is still standing.

The snow was at least six inches – 15cm – deep, perhaps more, and it came off in heavy piles that broke on the ground with a muffled flump.

With threats of more snow on the way, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on the roof for the rest of the week. Perhaps you should watch yours, too.
