Edwardian Farm coming soon

Good news for fans of Victorian Farm: the BBC has just announced that it has commissioned a follow-up, Edwardian Farm, and it looks set to be bigger and better than the original.

Where Victorian Farm crammed a year of life in late-1800s rural Britain into just six episodes, Edwardian Farm is a 12-programme series, bringing the team forward in time fifty-odd years to explore life in the early 1900s.

Like Victorian Farm, it’ll be fronted by Alex Langlands, Peter Ginn and Ruth Goodman, but it will be moving from the Acton Scott Estate to a currently undisclosed location, and occasionally break out of the strict farm-based format to explore the other manual tasks of the day: boat building, mining, fishing and so on.

As yet, there is no set date for transmission, but the BBC is prepping an Edwardian Farm preview page. Keep an eye on that for more information.

Victorian Farm was a big hit for the BBC, with the last episode of the series attracting twice the usual audience for a programme in its timeslot. While we can’t all keep sheep and cows in the back yard and few of us would year for the days when washing the family’s clothes was a physical four-day job, it taught us a lot about how we can be more self sufficient by revealing how life was lived in the days before mass production, when there were no big supermarkets, and when people produced their own food and ate according to the seasons.

It has been repeated on BBC4 since its original transmission, but if you missed it you can buy the Victorian Farm book (£10.99) and DVD (£10.98) through Amazon and other retailers.
