Christmas presents… already

Six weeks today it’ll be Christmas. That’s a scary thought. I’ve bought one present so far, but there are some presents we’re both giving that we’ve already thought out, and that don’t involve the shops at all.

Every time we’ve bottled or preserved something over the last few months, we’ve made a few extras for the neighbours. Not for now, but for a secret midnight raid we’re going to do, dropping off baskets of surprises on their doorsteps to be found on Christmas morning.

So, we have apple jelly using apples from the tree by the river at the end of the road, and tomato chutney using tomatoes from our own vines. We’ll drop in a bottle of the wine, assuming it turns out OK and isn’t undrinkable, some home-baked cookies, perhaps some toffee, and certainly some eggs from the chucks.

As soon as we syphon the wine out into bottles this weekend we’re going to start on brewing this winter’s batch of beer. It would have been nice to have included some of that, too, but I don’t think it will have proved in the bottles for long enough by then, which is a shame.

All in all, though, I’m quite pleased with the range of edible goodies we can put in the baskets this year, and I can’t wait until late at night on Christmas Eve when we can creep stealthily around the houses at our end of the street dropping off surprises on our neighbours’ doorsteps.

But there’s still time, so I would like to think of a few other things we could include, or perhaps swap out for what we’re already planning to put in. What would you leave on your neighours’ doorsteps on Christmas Eve? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.

That’s an adorable idea! I’m putting jam, marmalade, pickled eggs, fresh eggs if we still have them, miniature hand-sewn chicken paperweights and chai tea (recipe for that nicked from the Omlet forum) in mine. I like the idea of a spiced chai tea mix. It’s festive. I think whatever you’re putting in, your neighbours are very lucky. It’s such a lovely idea to do ’surprise’ delivery hampers.

Chai tea is an excellent idea, and I’ve dug out the recipe you’re referring to. I’m rather tempted to try it myself, as it looks very easy.

Nature is your enemy

Nature is your enemy: that’s the verdict of one BBC journalist berating the current trend of allotment ownership.

Strawberries without the straw

StrawberriesThe strawberries have been our big success story this summer. Surprising, really, as they have been a dead loss in years gone by.

Broody Barbara

Poor old Barbara clearly wants to be a mum. She’s not coming down from the nest in the morning, and after three hours (or more) of sitting on not only her eggs, but also Gerry and Margot’s efforts I’m having to physically lift her out of the Eglu and down into the run.

Oyster shell

I don’t think the chickens like oyster shell. It’s supposed to be good for them, as it replaces the calcium in their bodies that they lose through laying eggs, but whenever we put it in their layers’ pellets they just kick it out of the feeder.

May egg tally

Egg tally for 2009May saw a slight fall in the number of eggs laid by our three hens. That was unexpected, but there are some possible explanations.

Fruity oat slice

Fruity oat sliceA flapjack in essence, this is very quick and easy to bake and uses store cupboard ingredients, so you can keep stocked up on everything you need and make a new batch whenever you want some.

A hard year on the plot

2009 is turning out to be a very hard year on the plot. We have planted three runs of carrots on three different occasions and in two different locations, and none of them has taken.

Hot hot hot

The sunny weather has pushed up the temperature in the greenhouse to the mid-50s Celsius (127F), and the plants are struggling to cope.

Dropped apricots

ApricotsThe apricot tree is looking distinctly sorry for itself and now, with a gust of wind, it’s lost two of its only four fruits.

Why should you grow your own?

Very small cauliflowerWe had a very good demonstration of why it’s worth growing your own this week, even when vegetables are so cheap in the shops at the moment. Here it is.
