Christmas presents… already
Posted on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 in General – Comments: (3)
Six weeks today it’ll be Christmas. That’s a scary thought. I’ve bought one present so far, but there are some presents we’re both giving that we’ve already thought out, and that don’t involve the shops at all.Every time we’ve bottled or preserved something over the last few months, we’ve made a few extras for the neighbours. Not for now, but for a secret midnight raid we’re going to do, dropping off baskets of surprises on their doorsteps to be found on Christmas morning.
How to make ginger beer: simple recipe

We’re having a week off, and it’s wonderful. It’s giving us time to do loads of odd jobs that have been stacking up, like clearing out borders, tidying up the strawberry patch and starting on the Christmas beer, which should be ready for bottling at the weekend. At the moment, though, we sitting back with a glass of ginger beer each, which we’ve just finished syphoning from the demijohn.
Harvesting the beetroot

The beetroot has been growing quite happily in a shady strip at the back of the plot this year, and to be honest we’ve probably not paid it the attention it’s due. Hidden behind the carrots it’s been largely ignored, so what we would find as we went to dig it up this afternoon we didn’t really know.It would have served us right if it had been entirely slug-eaten and unsuitable for human consumption, but as we pulled back some of the leaves and forked out the first bulb we found enormous potato-like roots sitting half out of the soil.
Chicken update

The chooks were making quite a racket this morning. I have no idea why. Normally they’re as quiet as anything until you head out with their morning feed and call ‘chickens’ from outside the hut. That gets them all excited, they start to do that funny murmuring thing chickens do, and then leap down the ladder as soon as you open the door.
Home-brewed wine
Posted on Sunday, November 9th, 2008 in Brewing and winemaking – Comments: (1)
A new venture. This week we’re making wine. We’re cheating slightly, as we’re using a kit, which yields 30 bottles for £19, so about 63p a pop. Will it be undrinkable? Who knows. I suspect not, but at that price we shall see. It’s much quicker than making beer, as despite the fact that most home-brewed wines should be proved in the bottle for six months to year before drinking, this kit assures us that our cellar will be fully-stocked and ready for drinking in just seven days.
