Our chooks are about a year and a half old now, and we want to expand our flock so that when they stop laying we can still expect some eggs.
But we have a dilemma: another three from a breeder (like our current girls), or three from the battery hen rescuers?
We're veering towards the rescue hens, but it feels like a false economy. They might be cheaper, but they won't be much younger than our current three, so they'll be at about the same stage in the laying careers. What would you do?
Nik, if you are thinking long term about egg production and don't need to have immediate layers, why not have the excitement of getting a few hatching eggs and rearing your next girls that way? There are a few cons to this idea (might be more boys than girls, it is a long time before the girls will be laying, you have to wait until one of your present girls are broody etc etc) but it is a whole new experience and one worth going through.
Can't you sell the boys back to the breeder (or someone else?)
